Love it after the SECOND one.
This review is for the A-S301, as Amazon seems to lump all the reviews for all the models together. I wanted to build a small 2ch system for music in my small office. Keeping to a budget under $400 I was cross shopping this with the NAD C 316BEE and the Cambridge Audio Azur 351. The connectivity options won out (the NAD would need a phono preamp, and both a DAC. I realize the Cambridge has one, but its USB only. I needed the Optical and Coax connectors for my equipment). The Yamaha, on paper anyways, also had more power which, while not important for my use, was a bonus. Even though the Yamaha was a much bigger and bulkier amp, I went for it. As I said in the headline, the item works great, but I had to replace my first one. The first one, while working perfectly and sounding great had a defect in which if the unit was turned off, a relay would randomly click inside, sometimes within minutes or even seconds. Annoying for sure. Assuming maybe I had bad power going to it, I tried different outlets and even brought it to a different location, no improvement. That being said once powered up, it worked perfectly. I called Yamaha support and they told me this behavior was not normal, so Amazon to the rescue, I got a new one. The new one works great and no bizarre clicking. Now for the review, I certainly don't consider myself an "audiophile" my expectations are probably "mid-fi" at best and this unit meets my expectations. I have it connected to a pair of SVS Prime Bookshelf speakers. For sources, I have connected a Vizio TV, a PS3 Slim, a Stanton T.92USB Turntable, and a Yamaha YBA-11 Bluetooth Audio Adapter. The PS3 is connected via HDMI to the TV, and the TV optically to the amp's built-in DAC. The Bluetooth Adapter is connected to the DAC as well, via coaxial, and its power is being provided by the included USB connector on the amplifier. The turntable, while offering pretty much every means of connection possible, is being connected to the "Phono" input of the amp via an Audioquest Evergreen RCA cable. So for the build quality, it has a nice thick and solid brushed aluminium face plate but yes, the knobs are plastic. The controls however do have a nice action to them and work very well. Looking inside, the layout is very nice including dual heatsinks and nice oversized components. Wiring seems to be kept to a minimum and every section is isolated to its own separate circuit board. The circuit and component layout seems to be a pretty thoughtful design. for both short signal paths and serviceability. Around back are a nice set of binding post connectors for both an A and B set of speakers, a permanently attached power cord, impedance switch, a switch to enable an energy saving auto power off (after 8 ours of non-use) plenty of RCA inputs(5), a coax and optical digital input for the built-in DAC plus a USB port to supply 5v power. Please note, you cannot connect a USB audio source to this jack, its for power only. Last but certainly not least, a Phono input suitable for MM cartridges. The included remote, well its functional, but has many small non backlit, hard to read buttons and feels very cheap and plasticy. Its also silver, funny being that the A-S301 is only available in black in the U.S. I wish it matched. Like I said, functional, but kind of disappointing compared to the amp itself. I've had no problems with the DAC and any of its digital inputs. They sync up and remain connected, and the sound, while some may say is not as good as a standalone unit, sounds very good to my ears, smooth and warm sounding. Personally I think it sounds better than the same inputs on my Marantz NR-1604, a 7.1 receiver that I also own, but my speakers could be coming into play here. The RCA connections are fine, no hum, hiss, or anything bad. As for the phono stage, I've read some reviews that say its not all that great. Well to me with my turntable, (Stanton T.92USB) vinyl has never sounded better. I should mention I upgraded the terrible included cartridge to an Ortofon S-120. Before connecting to this amp, the turntable was connected to my Marantz and I have tried all the inputs. USB to a PC was by far the worst, followed by RCA line level, Coax digital actually sounded a bit better than RCA, go figure. Now using the proper phono input offered by this Yamaha the sound is by far the best. Bass is much more solid, mids are smooth, and highs, which for some reason were always lacking are once again present. I've had the T.92 turntable for years and to be honest have never really liked the sound. This Yamaha is finally making it sound like it should have in the first place. I can only imagine what an upgraded more for listening and not DJ use turntable may bring. So for me, the built-in phono preamp is very much a win. Finally onto the overall sound. The amp is still "burning-in" as they say, and while I generally don't buy into that, I did notice a difference when I got my replacement. I had used the first one for almost 2 weeks and had come to really enjoy the sound, very neutral, smooth, but articulate and powerful for its class. When I received the replacement, how can I say it, the sound was almost "boxed-in" by comparison. That being said, I now have probably 15 hours on the new one and its already opening up and sounding better and better as time goes on, so be sure to give it some hours of use before passing judgement on the sound. My other amp choices might have been better, but i'll never know. I do feel with music especially, the sound does compare very favorably to my Marantz NR-1604, a more expensive 7.1 unit. The Yamaha just sounds a bit warmer and inviting, especially when pushed. The 60w/ch power rating is probably a bit on the conservative side. The amp has no problems driving my SVS Prime Bookshelf speakers (8ohm, 87db sensitivity, 20-150w recommended power, 6.5" woofer, 1" tweeter) to extremely loud levels if asked. So to sum it up, the A-S301 offers nice sound, plenty of power, excellent connectivity, and great build quality. The built-in phono stage and DAC are NOT mediocre but actually sound pretty nice to me, and for most may never need to be upgraded. This is a great entry into better than average 2 ch audio. As long as I don't have any issues with the replacement, I hope to be happy for quite some time. UPDATE 4/10/16 Since this review I have upgraded some of my equipment (my turntable to a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC, and just today a U-Turn Audio Pluto phono preamp.) I have been using the Pro-Ject turntable for months and it has been great, a solid upgrade from my old Stanton. This Yamaha continues to work without issue. I wanted to talk about the built-in phono preamp. While many have complained that the preamp was sub par, I disagreed, however had no real basis for comparison. Now I do. I still stand by that the built-in works well, but its not the "end all be all" As I mentioned earlier, I just purchased a U-Turn Audio Pluto preamp due to some very favorable reviews online. After some serious A-B testing, its probably not surprising that the Pluto sounds better, the difference however is not as huge as one might think. Output level is similar enough not to matter. Background noise/hum is a little cleaner on the Pluto. Bass output is comparable as are the highs. Where the Pluto excels is at midbass, much more pronounced than the Yamaha built-in but certainly not too thick or muddy. The resulting sound is warmer and fuller, and in a good way. Certain LPs had an almost brittle or thin sound quality and could be fatiguing at higher volumes when played through the built-in. I'll be keeping the Pluto. All that said, given the price point of this amp, the built in is sufficient and still does a decent job for what it is, although if the purchase of the Yamaha is based solely on inclusion of the preamp (it was for me) just know that going with a dedicated preamp may yeild more pleasant results.

My wife and I have quite a nice collection of records. But had no real proper way to listen to them. A month ago I started the process of trying to build a budget HiFi set-up. I spent the most time researching integrated amps.

I don't remember exactly how I stumbled on this amp, but appreciated the simplicity of its features. All I wanted was clear stereo sound. Nothing more nothing less. Oh boy does this thing deliver. Its not often where I drop money in the hundreds of dollars range and feel 100% satisfied with my purchase, but this amp was easily worth every single penny.

I am still learning more about what I like from audio. In general, I really enjoy very clear mids. I have this amp paired up with some old Polk Monitor 5 Jr+ (Series 2) speakers and I have never heard audio sound this crisp at this level of volume. This amp really makes my speakers sing and sound beautiful. Unfortunately I do not have any other speakers to test this amp out with, but from my personal set up I find the midrange to be superb.

I find the DAC to work great as well. I digest a lot of music via Spotify on the old smart TV and it sounds fantastic. Another strong reason I bought this amp was because it offered direct digital connections. No complaints on that front.

I have not tested the Phono stage as my turntable (AT-LP60 yeah yeah I know...) has a built in pre-amp. That being said, I have never heard records sound so clear and full. I found myself nodding with a huge grin on my face listening to the clarity coming out of my new system.

I finally feel like I have a proper stereo HiFi system. This amp drives the whole thing and everything sounds wonderful. If you are looking for a budget amp, look no further. You will not regret picking this up.

This unit replaced a three-year-old entry level Marantz integrated amplifier. The unit was very warm sounding but just seemed to lack enough power to drive my 6 ohm Deftech tower speakers. The bass was always a bit thin, even with the loudness control turned on. So, I got online and started looking for an amp that would sound good but also provide more oomph to my speakers. For about a month I went back and forth between the Marantz PM8006 and the Yamaha A-S801. The thing that turned my mind in favor of the Yamaha was the A-S701 at a lower price. My network player has an internal DAC, so the DAC on the more expensive Yamaha really was not necessary. The variable loudness control was also a plus, as most of my music has be played at low level, being in a small apartment.
Prime got the unit to me in two days, then the unboxing started. This integrated amp is sharp looking and built like a tank. Hookup of everything was quick and easy, then it was time for the true test, powering the unit on and playing some test tracks. My go-tos are 'The Nightfly' by Donald Fagen (pretty much anything by Steely Dan will work), the Belgian jazz rock group Abraxis, and many more obscure jazz recordings from Europe.
The first thing that was noticeable was that the Yamaha was somewhat more neutral than the Marantz, unless you activated the 'CD Direct' or 'Pure Direct' modes. Taking away the internal toine controls gives you a HUGE boost of volume and clarity in the mid and treble ranges. Turning these buttons off lowered the volume significantly but WOW! When you turned the volume back up, the bottom end was full without being boomy or muddy and the mids and highs were defined but not shrill or harsh. I have been running the variable loudness in the 'flat' position which really does all aspects of the music justice.
In the end this is a fine product with amazing sound and build quality. This will be in my stereo system for years to come!

5 year update: After many different speaker combinations, it appears that the Yamaha was not at fault; the DefTechs were notoriously inefficient. I now have a pair of Polk Es60s and they have never sounded so good.

Stunning sound and plenty of clean power.

This Yamaha A-S501 amplifier replaced an Onkyo AV receiver I’ve had since the mid-90’s. This amp doesn’t “sound” different per se, as sonic differences between properly functioning solid state amps are virtually nonexistent, but it blows the old receiver out of the water with regard to technical performance and aesthetics.

Its noise and distortion levels are inaudible, including the noise floor of the phono input. I listen to a lot of records and can attest to the quality of this amp’s phono section. I have to turn the volume up a bit higher on this input even though I use a standard MM cartridge with 5mV output, which leads me to conclude that there’s not a ton of gain in the circuit. That doesn’t bother me, but people with fussy cartridge requirements are likely using standalone phono preamps anyway. If you’re running a “standard” turntable setup, this amp’s phono stage will treat you very well.

The digital inputs are a nice touch on a classic-minded amp like this. DAC chips don’t really sound different from each other, so I won’t entertain subjective analysis of these inputs’ “sound,” but the inputs function like they should and let me connect my TV and Airport Express digitally, which is nice. Everything sounds crystal clear and problem-free.

There are a host of analog inputs and outputs, as well as a decent headphone output. I say “decent” because it does have high output impedance, which means it will cause some frequency response issues with certain headphones. It gives my Sennheiser 58x headphones a bit of a bass boost as a result, which I don’t mind, but people who fuss over headphones will want to use a standalone headphone amp via the amp’s analog outs. I find it odd that plugging headphones into the port shuts off audio to the speakers, and I wish I could leave my headphones connected to the amp at all times. Oh well.

The amp has plenty of power and current, driving my relatively inefficient C-Note bookshelf speakers to very loud levels with ease and without distorting. In a time where many integrated amps are forgoing tone controls in the name of passing an audiophile purity test, Yamaha have gracefully included them here, along with an adjustable loudness contour. This knob is a godsend, allowing the user to compensate for the shortcomings of the human ear’s natural frequency response at lower listening levels by filling out the low and high end, so that even if you’re keeping things quiet, you’ll hear a full, pleasing balance of sound that’s adjustable to your needs. And, should you want to take all of those nasty enjoyment-enhancing impurities out of the signal path, just press the “Pure Direct” button.

Aesthetically, the amp is very handsome, especially in the silver finish. It was a major factor in my purchasing decision, as I find so many amps and receivers to be hideous black boxes. The remote is very functional, though I just use my Fire TV remote to control the amp’s power and volume, and select input by hand. The lack of a screen and menus is perfect, as I’d much rather control things with knobs and buttons. The knobs and buttons do feel a tad cheap, which is my only minor gripe with this amp. I wish the tone knobs had a bit more weight behind their movement. Since that has no impact on performance, it doesn’t really bother me.

Overall, if 85wpc is enough for your speakers and you like this style of amp, it’s a great buy!

I just love it I have used it for two weeks so glad I got it in silver. I’ve got a project tube phono box I use for vinyl and my cheap cd player has never sounded this good. I plug my iPad into the usb and I think it has a cleaner sound than my cd player. It shipped the same day I bought it & it came double boxed. Great price and great seller. Thanks

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 2 Channel Stereo Amplifier

After a week of break in period on this amplifier, I find the sound to be excellent. Lots of warm, heavy deep bass, and plenty of birght treble. It's nice to have loudness control but I would have liked it better if it had positive gain. It only has negative. So, you can really only turn it down as you turn up the volume. I have it turned down half way but at low volume I'd like to have positive gain. I feel the remote stole a whole star from an otherwise great amplifier. You cannot control the Bass, Treble or Loudness on the remote. Yet, they added controls for a CD player? I'd rather have full control of the amps features from the remote. Other than that the sound is exceptional. Having banana clips for the speakers is nice. All in all a very great buy. This is a step up from using an AV amp for 2 channel stereo. The sounds is so much better.
